Stop These Medications Alert

You must stop taking some medications prior to your surgery as instructed by your physician or your case could be canceled. If you take prescribed medication, you must have permission from your prescribing provider to stop taking it before your procedure. Please contact your physician’s office for detailed and customized medication guidelines.


If you are you are taking a Glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor agonist (GLP1) for weight loss or diabetes (examples below), please review the following general facility guidelines:

► Hold GLP 1 agonists on the day of the procedure/surgery for patients who take the medication daily.

► Hold GLP-1 agonists a week prior to the new procedure/surgery for patients who take the medication weekly.

► List of GLP-1 agonists

  • Ozempic, Rybelsus, Wegovy (semaglutide)
  • Trulicity (dulaglutide)
  • Victoza (liraglutide)
  • Adlyxin (lixisenatide)
  • Bydureon, Bydureon BCise, Byetta (exanitide)
  • Tanzeum (albiglutide)
  • Soliqua 100/33 (insulin glargine/lixisenatide)
  • Xultopy 100/3.6 (insulin degludec/liraglutide)

If you are diabetic, please get in touch with the medical provider who manages your diabetes before discontinuing your medication. The medical provider who manages your diabetes and your surgeon will need to review blood glucose level guidelines with you as well. Diabetic patients will have their blood glucose tested prior to the surgery at our center.

If you are taking any blood thinner medications (examples below) please contact your prescribing provider. You should review the guidelines for stopping your medication provided by your prescribing provider with your surgeon. Your surgeon may also require a recent EKG to be on file prior to your surgery.
